This was our first time to teach English to Children and we were the first group. The warm up was the first stage we started to present our name ; then, we encourage Ss by saying their names three times with a soft toy .This activity we wanted to use the Stephen Krashen's Theory of second language acquisition. According to this theory, the optimal way a language is learned is through natural communication. The ideal is to create a situation wherein language is used in order to fulfill authentic purposes. This is turn, will help students to ‘acquire’ the language instead of just ‘learning’ it. After that , we gave for each learner one sticker to paste in their chest with their name.
The next stage we presented the vocabulary in flashcards . we did a mimic description according to each family member and Ss had to follow the actions. we used in this part total Physical response method in which it attempts to teach language through physical (motor) activity developed by James Asher. He claims that speech directed to young children consists primarily of commands, which children respond to physically before they begin to produce verbal responses. That is why we used this method in our class.TPR Method
We gave instructions and provide Ss some flashcards and some labels. They had to match the picture according to the students who has the correct label. We sang a song and showed the picture according with the family member, and Ss had to follow their teacher by the use of TPR method.
In the production stage we gave a picture/card to each student about family members. We explained that they are going to make a family tree in a construction paper. The purpose of this stage was that they are going to ask to their classmate who is this? some of them fulfiled the objetive of the activity.
Finally, we gave review of the vocabulary we used the same question Who is this? and the answered that by saying the family member. Notwithstanding, children were hyperactive they learned clearly all of the six family members that we taught.
As a conclusion, we want to say thank you to teacher Lorena Pérez. She helped us by implementing some strategies in the activities. Also, she gave us advice how to perform the class. Even Though, we did not have any experience teaching English to young learners . We will work harder to improve our classes ,and we will show what we have learned.
